Job Title: Lead Youth Worker (Fusion BH1)

Salary: Salary: YMCA Bournemouth Grade 6: £22,234 to £27,500 per annum, pro rata, dependent on experience and qualifications.

Details of Hours / Contract Length: This vacancy is for a basic 3 hours per week and includes Saturdays 6.15 to 9.15 p.m. There must be recognition of the need for flexibility.

Description of Vacancy:
a) To lead, develop and maintain youth work activities directly with young people aged 13-19 years old (Saturday evenings) and supporting others to do the same.
b) To take overall responsibility for the safety and quality of youth work. Ensuring health and safety / safeguarding regulations are met and session monitoring records are kept fully up to date.
c) To work in close synergy with the Youth Music Events Coordinator, ensuring positive frequent communication and a collaborative working relationship.
d) To positively support the programme of music events with a flexible and helpful attitude in order to achieve successful outcomes for young musicians and organisers.
e) To lead on all safeguarding issues, dealing with them efficiently and effectively and keeping the Head of Youth Work informed of issues that are being dealt with. (This role has a statutory and occupational safeguarding responsibility.)
f) Achieving the targets and objectives set by funders and YMCA direction. These contribute to the YMCA Youth Work Business Plan and will be communicated by the Head of Youth Work.
g) To contribute towards achieving the minimum numbers of young people required in sessions. To liaise with the Marketing Champion and community / school links in order to recruit new members, especially whenever numbers drop.
h) To ensure the team of staff and volunteers works efficiently and appropriately by giving clear directions, delegating effectively and maintaining quality of service.
i) Ensuring young people feel empowered to take a full and active part in decision-making processes and feeding into the YMCA Young Leaders scheme through their volunteering.
j) Developing young peoples’ skills and capabilities by providing programmes of activities. This may occasionally include work outside the youth centre such as a residential, trips or a youth exchange for which overtime will be paid.
k) To establish and maintain positive relationships and guide young people as part of YMCA programmes aligning with set project outcomes based on identified needs.
l) To oversee activities that develop the transferable skills of vulnerable young people, empowering them to thrive and to make positive contributions to their community.
m) To liaise closely with the Volunteer Coordinator to seek additional adult volunteers as required, overseeing their selection, induction, line management and ongoing development.
n) To liaise with the Volunteer Coordinator to source appropriate training for young volunteers/leaders, helping them to develop a range of skills and experience for their personal growth, employability and self-esteem. Ensuring these are accredited and celebrated through relevant internal and external schemes.
o) To assist with service development by constructively contributing to the planning, delivery and ongoing monitoring of youth work provision.
p) To feed up any grievances promptly before they escalate and affect team morale.
q) Where required, to assist in information sharing with local agencies (e.g. Children’s Social Care, Dorset Police, Early Help) and develop positive and professional working partnerships.
r) To assist and cover, from time to time, other youth projects in the YMCA youth department.
s) To contribute to the efficiency of administration of the youth work department, producing written and verbal reports as required (at least quarterly) for monitoring and evaluation.
t) To be conscious of working as part of a broad YMCA team serving young people throughout Bournemouth (and beyond) and to contribute to joined-up approaches meeting our objectives.
u) To contribute to team meetings and supervisions within the team.
v) To participate in all mandatory training as required and to take responsibility for own continuous professional development.
w) To undertake all work in adherence to YMCA Bournemouth’s policies and procedures, and in particular to those regarding: Equal Opportunities, Safeguarding, Health & Safety, Data Protection, Social Media and Lone Working.
x) To ensure that all health and safety instructions and risk assessments are adhered to and that all reasonable care is taken not to do anything that might endanger the worker or others.
y) To report to the appropriate persons any dangerous situations in the workplace or any shortcomings in health and safety arrangements.

In addition to the job set out in this job description the worker may, from time to time, be required to undertake additional or other duties as necessary within his or her capabilities and status to meet the needs of YMCA Bournemouth.
